Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Esmerelda was many things, had been many things, in this life and in past lives. One thing she had never been, however, was doted upon. So it was curiosity written across her face when she looked down from her studies of the stars that shone down upon the black sanded beach to find the salt-soaked vision of Wake. The druid still wore her own fur slightly curled, having not bothered to bathe in fresher waters, enjoying the way the sea made her silvered wisps look.

“What did you find, amante?” The woman asked, tail sweeping the ground once or twice before it settled again. There was a certain sort of affection that lingered in her gaze, in her smile as she looked upon the woman she'd tangled her limbs with the day she'd woken up here. Since then, there was a certain draw to her that Esmerelda could not quite explain, and didn't concern herself with trying. The only thing that mattered was that she enjoyed the woman's company, and was pleased to see her approaching.

“Did you cut the testículos off some poor man?” "Poor" was a loosely used word. No man could live up to the standards that Esmerelda held.

Her laugh rang like the peal of a bell, charmed by the fierceness of the woman that had managed to so quickly draw her favor. “If anyone could do it, meu lindo encantador, it is you.” Because who would be so bold, so fierce, so cutting to do so? Her sailor of a woman.

Esmerelda ignored the bid of possessiveness in her head, not quite so used to calling another hers, as she was to things, objects, places. Instead, the druid focused on what was so gently placed in front of her, stormy eyes peering down at the spiky ball with many questions. First was the obvious one of how Wake had managed to carry this thing without hurting herself. Second, of course, was how had she managed to eat it without doing the same.

It seemed that the woman was going to show her. “I will try anything you offer, Wake,” Her smile was, perhaps, a touch suggestive; the way she uttered the name of her lover suggestive as well, a call back to their first day together. “Teach me?”

Another laugh, a pleased grin taking her expression. To have such an effect on the woman painted a stroke of pride across the sea-nymph's palette of emotions, as if she had twisted a spell over the woman that had dried her fur in a way that none before her had. “Why shouldn't I, when it's so much fun to charm you?”

Even so, Esme would watch as Wake fetched a stone and dropped it upon the gift she had presented, bring the woman to raise an eyebrow as she peered closer to see what effect the action had. The thing seemed less... round, more lopsided now. And this, apparently, was the way to retrieve this delicious snack the sailor raved about.

Curious to try this herself, no sooner had Wake asked if she would try did the merle woman pick up the rock herself, awkward and heavy in her jaws. Carefully, she held it over the thing, checking no less than three times to make sure she had positioned it correctly, before dropping it. She was rewarded with a sound she could not describe, amethyst eyes examining the broken spikes and the larger crack that broke it apart.

The scent was like nothing she had experienced before, but she could not deny her desire and excitement to try something new. “Again? Or can I have this snack now?”

It would have pleased the Druid deeply to know she had such an effect upon the woman. While she flirted with everyone, Wake had been seemingly different from the moment they’d met. She could not explain such thoughts, nor did she care to examine them all too closely; she was simply happy with how things were settling out for the time being.

“A sailor?” She would parrot back with a roguish, devilish smile. “No no. I think that you are the sailor, and I, the siren.” A flicker of her tail, a nip of her teeth along the ridge of Wake’s jaw. “Wouldn’t you agree, amante?”

But wait for an answer, she did not, instead doing as instructed to devour her exciting, new snack. The texture was curious, slimy almost, but with a taste that seemed otherworldly and divine. A noise of delight left the Merle-marked woman, an involuntary wag of her tail showing her reaction to the snack, her tongue sweeping the insides to catch any last morsels she might have left behind.

“Delicious, truly. How did you discover this could be eaten?”

She couldn't help the way her ear flickered, the way her heart stuttered at the brief display of affection, the way heat rose to the surface of her skin at that kiss to the back of her ear. So innocent, and yet it struck her deeply. Funny, how their sinful dance did nothing to make the woman blush but a simple, gentle kiss flushed her skin as if it were singe all her fur away.

The softest clearing of her throat was a mental shake of her head.

Birds, hm? How curious it was to learn how to eat something from creatures that did not seem to have the same level of intelligence as wolves. Perhaps it was a touch species-ist to think as such, but Esmerelda was no perfect creature and thought exactly that. Birds were smart in some ways, and not so smart in others. There was a reason that wolves were predators and birds tended to be prey. There would always be exceptions, of course.

The notion of more, though? While she was not desperately hungry, a snack sounded nice. “Lead the way,” She stated simply, looking to Wake, her tail waving slightly.

Rolled to see if the crab got her.

Tide pools. Little pockets of water and moonlight, pockets of magic in the real world. But who was to say that any of it was real or not? As she peered down into the shallow depths of the tidepools, the cool night breeze played with the soft, curled tendrils of the woman's fur. There was so much life in these little puddles, so much that she never would have thought about had Wake not brought them to her attention. Tiny crabs and shrimp, hidden octopi, anemones that danced and moved as if they heard music that no one else in the world could hear.

There, she could see the small, spiky balls that her lover had brought to her. Would she try more of those, or was there something else here in these pools of life to be had? “How about...” Her voice trailed off as she focused, periwinkle eyes hardening as they found their target, watching, waiting, waiting, waiting...

There.

Uncoiling like a snake, head striking similarly, Esme's jaws cut the water. Her teeth snapped down, catching a small but sizeable crab between them, its pinchers flailing this way and that as it tried to fight back.

“Ah!” She hissed, shaking her head with a violent, sudden motion. The crustacean did not deem it fit to let go, however.

Pain, bright and violent. She yelped and hissed and thrashed at the feeling, hexing and cursing this creature as if she could wish death upon it. And perhaps she could.

In the moment that Esme stopped lashing herself about, Wake swept in to rescue her, crunching the thing attached to her between powerful jaws. All at once, the hot, searing sensation stopped as the dead animal released her lip, blood dripping down from her maw to the black sand beneath her feet. A cruel glare cut the moonlit beach to land upon the thing that was now split in half, its bloodied claws clutching emptiness in its last throes of death.

“Thank you,” She breathed, frustrated that such a thing had managed to surprise her in such a way. The wound would heal, Esmerelda was sure of that, her tongue flashing out to sweep the small bead of blood away. “What is it?”

She snorted at the comment, half amusement, half irritation. Not at Wake, no, but at the circumstance. Things like that were bound to happen when dealing with the unknown, but Esmerelda did not have to appreciate them. Looking down upon the crab, the sea-witch huffed out that anger and bid it farewell, instead lowering her head to sniff at the half of it that had been pushed towards her.

Its claw was a simple and tiny thing. Curious that it could cause such hurt, though she supposed that their claws were akin to a wolf's teeth. Still. Such musings were nothing next to the vindication she would feel at cleaning the creature of its innards, using a paw to turn the thing upwards and her tongue to reach into the shell and feast upon the soft, delicate meat within.

“It is good. Maybe even worth the struggle if we can find a safer way to catch them...” She mused this allowed, her desire for new sated at the moment. Tonight, she would stick to the things that she had eaten before, including the urchins that Wake had found and gifted.
