There was a certain sense of caution with his entry into the forest. As if he expected Nosey to just pop his ugly mutant mug up behind the next tree. Thank goodness that seemed about as likely to happen as Mal having good luck. The pack's scent was gone, in Mal's eyes there was danger of Nosey reappearing unless Mal himself tripped over a corpse, he at least felt maaayyybe that chance was probably low. Hopefully he could smell that nasty as hell guy coming (or at least Mal disliked him enough that he found the man's scent foul enough to recognize).
Some part of him hoped that his sister had returned here -- that after whatever suffering he'd dealt with both recently experienced and those forgotten, Mal deserved a win. Life wasn't going to give him a win, but he still deserved one. He'd open his heart to all who'd wanted to hide under his wings, and it seemed like more often than not he'd ended up hurt from it. And yet, here he was not stopping. Why couldn't he just find his sister? Someone else important to his past? He was alert for anything, though, every step taken methodically, ears swiveling at any sound.
You know what? He had no idea why anyone would even want to live in this weirdo place.
