Steps to Reproduce

1. Receive a PM
2. Move it to trash
3. Switch to an account with the setting "attached_account_pms" turned off
4. Notice that the message alert still appears

Note: This is default MyBB behaviour. The fix will require adding a forced "read" when a user moves specifically to the trash folder.
