Welcome to Canis Major

a wolf and animal rpg (role-playing game)

Canis is a writing community for play-by-post (forum-based), freeform roleplay set in a fictional dream world in the intrusion fantasy genre. Most characters on Canis are wolves; many play elements are focused around wolves and canids, but the world makes room for a large variety of other animal characters such as dogs, horses, cats, bears, deer, and many, many more.

Our community is focused on flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. That boils down to a few important features:

  • There is no set activity requirement to write
  • The setting and plot are member-created and staff-supported
  • The game is continuously improved to increase fun and decrease stress

Whatever she had been doing before was of no consequence to the silverspun fae as soon as she heard the cries of a child, of an infant. Ears slicked back against her head, the once-mother hurriedly moved towards the cries, brows cinched together in obvious concern. While she had not been terribly far away, it was enough to give her time to wonder whose child it was, where its mother was, what had happened that it was crying, screaming even.

Her pace quickened into a lope as those cries grew louder and more concerning, rushing closer once she spotted the pup. Only when she was within a few feet did the woman slow, pausing to look this way and that, looking for... anything, anyone that could belong to this poor child. Frowning when nothing came to fruition, lavender eyes peered down at the child, heat prickling at her eyes for a moment before she blinked it away and lowered her head to sniff at the child, gently.

“Hello,” Came her soft and gentle voice. That it was not a wolf did not even cross her mind.

She couldn't help the soft, warm smile that stretched across her muzzle as those chubby paws reached upwards for her, lowering her head further to allow the touch, to encourage it. Further still, the woman lowered herself to her belly and crawled closer, moving to curl around the little thing for a minute, unsure how long it had been alone, how long it had been uncared for. Deeply, Jesuite hoped nothing had happened to his mother; deeper still, she hoped that this world and its gods were not so cruel as to place a puppy here, all on its own.

Murmuring soft words and comforts, she provided her warmth to the cub, nosing and sniffing his head before sweeping a caressing tongue across his nose, that smile still ever present. She missed her own children, even if she could not remember their names, or their faces. She knew she'd had them, and she knew she'd loved them.

Ah, she had missed the feeling of the tiny needles that were puppy teeth, laughing warmly as she mouthed at him back, gently. Her nose nudged his face, cleaning the little thing in between his chewing and the batting of his paws. It was easy to slip into this role again, as if she had never left it in the first place. Even if the pup was not her blood, Jesuite would care for him until such a time came that his parents showed. And if they did not? She would still look after him like she would her own son.

“What shall we call you, hm?” She asked no one but herself, certain that the child, her child could not yet speak. Almost immediately, a thought came to her, as if plucked from thin air. A naming convention that felt as old and as familiar as time itself. She would name him with the same sound as her own name started. Why, or even where it had come from, Jesuite could not say, but it felt right and truly, that was all that mattered to her.

“Jacoby? No... Jasper... Jax... Jin...” And all at once, it came to her. A beatific smile, and a single kiss to his cheek.

Javert.

And now I'm going to sign a bunch of Les Mis songs... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffACv8yBp5E <- pronunciation

Phone post bc I have problems and am in bed. I will format tomorrow

There was truly nothing more beautiful sounding to her than the soft, innocent babbling noises that children made. Even if there were no words, no intelligent phrases, the once-mother, again-mother understood them all the same. Javert was content, happy even, the tear tracks that had lined the contours of his uniquely shaped face dried and cleaned.

With the babe given warmth and a name, the next tasks she had upon her shoulders were a safe, protected den and a source of food. Head lifting, Jesuite peered around them, thinking about somewhere nearby and safe. While she had not been planning on settling and finding a den just yet, a temporary one certainly couldn’t hurt; at least until she figured out a plan of action.

Nosing the boy again, the silver spun creature unwound herself and rose to her feet before picking Javert up by his scruff and heading towards the nearby copse of trees. Surely, she would find a suitable shelter there.

He was heavier than a wolf cub, but Jesuite minded this little. She was determined and when a child was involved, she was doubly so. Until they found his mother, or until he was old enough to walk about himself, the woman would be happy enough to carry him around. Either way, one silver tufted ear flickered as he yawned, noting that little Javert was likely exhausted from all the crying, all the excitement. Sleep was due soon then, and she would watch over him through it.

First, however, was food. All babies ate their weight in it and she assumed that the hefty boy would be no different. Slipping into an out of sight, well protected little nook, the motherly creature settled Javert all the way in the back, where light could still be seen but wind and other elements could not reach him. Her nose brushed his cheek and she murmured to him, gently, “I will return soon with something to eat, alright?”

A quick lick replaced her nose and she was off, steps light and swift as she tracked down something small, a tide over for the time being. Catching a squirrel was no small feet but muscle memory was an astounding thing; she felt like she had hunted for squirrels a thousand times over, and it was in no time at all that she returned to the boy's side, her catch hanging limply from her jaws.

Closing this one up, lovely! <3

And just like that, he had her heart as he toddled towards his meal, a beatific smile spreading across her face as she laid down to watch him. Once he was finished, Jesuite would consume the rest and then curl around him so that they could both rest now, the trajectory of their lives interwoven and forever changed.
