Making a soft hum of approval, she leaned down to nuzzle Dimitri affectionately, admiring his assortment of pebbles he had so diligently arranged. He must have been picking up on a few of Amaranth's spiritual readings; it fascinated her how children were so quick to learn.
Her heart swelled with pride as he spoke of his days spent in prayer to the gods, how he had sought Houtu's guidance even without the gentle steering of Valeska's influence. She loved his earnest nature, his focused spirituality and how he would listen with such wide, shimmering eyes as she told him stories of the Beginning, how the Five had created wolfkind in their image to shape the earth around them.
“My sunlight,” she cooed, “There is nothing that could keep me from you or your siblings.”
Violet, obviously feeling put out, leaned into her mother hard, sporting a childish pout written all across her face. Valeska suspected she didn't have a spiritual bone in her body - that is, unless she ever found herself benefitting from prayer, which seemed unlikely since all of her requests would undoubtedly lean toward the accumulation of more stuff for herself. She shook her head, endeared nevertheless.
“Violet, I have told you before, ugliness comes from within,” she said pointedly, hoping the lesson would stick. “And none of that! Your brother is not crazy; you shall not speak of him so. It is important to learn to share and take joy in each other's company, even if you may not find it agreeable.”
The silver wolf cast a pleading look toward the heavens, wondering if the Five would aid her now; but only the sound of rustling grasses from outside answered her.
“To cause needless strife should be beneath us. Peace and harmony are paramount to living well-”
A soft, clear voice echoed from nearby, uttering only one word: 'Mama'.
Beautiful Narcissa. Elegance encapsulated, a perfect mirror reflecting Amaranth's grace and poise, her voice a soft bell that never rang too sharp. Even her heavy-lidded gaze seemed reminiscent of her golden parent, surveying the world around her as if she were a dreamer drifting through some grand illusion.
“Cissa, my lovely. It is so good to see you - I feel as if everyone has grown, though I was gone for so short a time!” she said with a smile, admiring her brood with the glowing pride that only a mother could express. “Have you and your siblings been keeping up with your prayers and sought for guidance as Dimitri has?”
Valeska maintained her smile with practiced effort, feeling she already knew the answer deep within her heart.
